From the words of their daughter, Melanie:
"They were married for 75 years.
Died exactly nine months apart. They farmed until Daddy was in his nineties. Back about 1968, or so they were voted farm family of the year in Santa Rosa County.
Daddy served on a few boards, and was president of the board for EREC for awhile. I think he had the first motorized cotton picker in this county. He and one of Mama's brothers went to Arkansas to get it.
Mama was a seamstress. She took in sewing for a few years to help make a living. She loved sewing as much as Daddy loved farming. Mama loved her yard and flowers. She had a passion for day lilies. She got into pollination and cross pollinating, and had some absolutely gorgeous colors. She also loved to garden. Mama and Daddy had four daughters. When my oldest sister was 19, and the next to oldest was 16, I came along. Then six years after me, came my youngest sister. Daddy wanted a son, so bad, to carry on the farm, but girls was all he got. Mama's uncle told him one day, "Narvie Lee, you could fill up the backyard, but it would all be girls." My parents loved the Lord and attended church faithfully. Work never came before church. It might come before family, but never before God. Mama said once she thought if she died during harvest, Daddy would just have her put on cold storage and wait on the funeral until he got all the crops in. Mama and Daddy moved on to this place about 1948. Before that they lived for a short time in Mobile, during the last of WWII, while Daddy worked at the shipyard, then they moved to the McCall area for a few years. My oldest sister started to school at McCall. But I think it was during her first grade year they moved to Jay, to this place. I live in the house that was originally on the place when they bought it."
They built the house they
passed away in, in 1975. It was their desire to be able to stay at home until the end, which we endeavored to honor.
