Mounce were both born and raised in Yadkin County North Carolina. They met after John had completed his World War II service in the U.S. Navy on a PT tender. Though this was considered “very hazardous” duty, even more so during wartime, he often joked about taking on the assignment “because it paid more”.
Their initial blind date led to an elopement and a marriage lasting 59 years, in which Mildred enjoyed teasing that John still had not repaid her the cost of the license. John’s graduation from college led to a collection of odd jobs ultimately landing in Winston-Salem, North Carolina as a technical illustrator with Western Electric andMildred finding employment as secretary to Vice President of the first Wachovia Bank location in Winston. Job opportunities with Western Electric found John and Mildred raising three children in Winston, El Paso, Texas, California, and one notable transfer to Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands Through the frequent change in residences, the Mounces developed a deep affection for travel leading to sightseeing vacations throughout the U.S., Japan, Europe and several island cruises, collecting art and souvenirs from each destination. Once retired, they felt a call to self employmentand became owner/franchisees of Pet Centers, based in Pensacola. This 20 year career wasenjoyed immensely until a second retirement in 1999. John settled happily into life filled withgrandchildren, friends, relatives, more travel, regular beach outings, Hadji Shrine and Masonic Lodge activities and attending Covenant Orthodox Presbyterian church with his wife until his passing at 82 in 2007. Mildredsaw grandchildren thrive, continued travel with friends and relatives, enlarged her pottery collection, while developing a love of amassing and selling antiques and attending church until her passing at 92 in 2025. Pictures and Additional Sales - Join Our Facebook Group An intrepid traveler with a refreshingly open mind, Tara Selene Hill lived a life defined by adventure and a "bottomless well" of generosity. A woman of action who never did anything by half measures, Tara was a trailblazer from the start, making history as the first African American Homecoming Maid of Honor at Jeff Davis High. She went on to earn multiple degrees, including a Master’s in Computer Information Systems Security, all with the distinction of magna cum laude.
Tara served her country with distinction in the U.S. Navy, with assignments spanning from Japan to New Zealand. Her commitment to service continued through her work with the Veterans Benefits Administration and as a "plank owner" and Vice President of Impact 100 Global Veterans. A natural leader and "doer," she also served two terms as President of the Hill Family Reunion, working tirelessly to ensure the gathering’s legacy for her beloved family. Tara found deep meaning in her names—signifying "elevated place," "star," and "moon"—a fascination she passed down to her daughters and even to her adored toy poodle, Trixie Sally. Witty, well-read, and warm-hearted, she "wore many hats" with grace, whether she was traveling to nearly every continent or cheering "down to the bone" for her Georgia Bulldogs and Atlanta Falcons. With a smile that brightened every room and a spirit that knew no quit, Tara leaves behind a legacy of achievement and an endless circle of friends. I am very honored that Tara's family has entrusted my team and me to hold her Estate Sale. I am certain we will make Ms. Tara and her family proud. During this sale, you will see many things from Taras Travels, as well as her affection for her heritage and life itself. Please take a look at the pictures and make plans to come to this wonderful sale this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
